Today, our big brown fella turns 13. Well, not so brown. Brown and white.
We know we are on borrowed time with this guy. We know what the life expectancy for a lab is, and we know he's well passed it.
We don't like to think about that. We like to love him and appreciate him, and enjoy his quirks and the liberties he takes now that he's of a certain age (like napping on the living room furniture!).
You would be hard pressed to find a better family dog. He's loyal and protective and strong, and he just knows when you need a cuddle and some company. He loves to be where the people are, so whether it's a bunch of teenagers watching a movie very loudly in the basement, or my book club gathered in the living room, he's there. He's mellow and very, very sweet.
He still loves to play in the snow or romp on the golf course, and he still navigates the stairs like a pro, just maybe a slower pro then back in his crazy-puppy days (and believe me, he was a crazy, wild-man puppy!)
So, when he's stretched out in a sunbeam and smiling up at us, we now take the time to crawl down onto the floor and join him in his sunbeam, and give him an extra cuddle or 2, and thank him deeply for making it to the ripe old age of 13 and for being such an important part of our family!

Dogs are the best, especially when you are lucky enough to find one that you feel this way about ... but I think that it is the family that makes the dog become who they are (sometimes) ... in your case, he knows he's loved & has given the same back to you :) They truly have a way to turn your day around & they know when that is needed ~ they are amazing :)
I was lucky enough to have 2 fabulously perfect dogs so far, one for 15 years, and one just turned 5 last week :)
